Special factory packaging prevents damage to the finish, but reasonable care must be exercised in handling Metal O'Rings to prevent minor surface damage, such as scratches and nicks, which can cause sealing problems.  It is also important that the O'Ring groove or flange sealing surface has a smooth (32rms) surface for normal applications.  There should be no traverse scratches or nicks.
